Year of Dragon

Client: Lane Crawford

Illustration for lane crawford’s CNY gift cards. To bring out the Chinese feeling required, I illustrated with Chinese ink. Consistency in Chinese ink is easily affected by humidity in the air. And to me, the diffusion and flow of the ink on wet paper are more unpredictable than watercolor, which often result surprising textures and layering.

I painted out the dragon body in an expressive stroke, then added details and embellishments on. Chinese ink is a very intriguing and inspiring material to work with.

Chinese ink with digital modification. 2012.

Carnival in a Sleepless Head

Client: White Noise Records

Poster illustration for the HK live tour album release by Miaou, a Japanese post-rock band. The idea of illustration – even if we are sleepless, we could keep on dreaming – comes from my insomnia experience. Miaou’s album The Day Will Come Before Long, to me, sounds like a mental carnival in a sleepless night. I associated this with Joan Miró’s Harlequin’s Carnival – phantom creatures dancing in an interior at night, some look whimsical, some look melancholic, a wild dream. I created the poster with the rhythmic energy I absorbed from Miró’s work. Typography set by Julius Hui, a brilliant local typographer.

Chinese ink with digital modification. 2011.

Souls in the Bottle

Client: Angeleno Wine Merchant

Angeleno Wine Merchant is an interesting Hong Kong wine seller founded by a pair of young twins. To celebrate the launch of their wine journal, Angeleno held a small exhibition in October 2011 at Kapok, a very special local boutique.

I was invited to create two promotional prints for the exhibition. One is inspired by the abundance of aromas in a wine sold in Angeleno. The other depicts the landscape of Napa Valley in California, where produces high quality wine Angeleno dedicates to introduce to Hong Kong.

Eat, Whatever

Client: SML Restaurant; 84000 Communications

This is one of my proudest advertising commissions. The print advertisements were placed alongside a busy escalator in Causeway Bay MTR Station. Viewing the illustrations in moving motion much enhances the humour and visual dynamism. Concept by 又一山人 (Mr Stanley Wong) from 84000 Communications: ‘going against the law of nature, you are free to choose’.

Pen and ink with digital modification. 2009.
